GEOSYNTHETIC CLAY LINERS

Volclay CETCO is the leading global producer of geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) used in liquid and waste containment applications such as landfills, ponds, wastewater lagoons, mining leach pads, wetlands and water supply channels. GCLs replace compacted clay layers and provide superior performance, increased installation speed, and lower total cost than clay.

Volclay CETCO GCLs are high performance environmental liners manufactured with durable high-strength geotextiles and a uniform layer of low-permeability Volclay sodium bentonite. As a manufacturer of the high quality GCLs, Volclay CETCO can manufacture a product that will meet the engineer’s critical requirements and specification. The geotextiles used, offer excellent resistance to physical or chemical break-down in harsh environments. The bentonite’s high swelling capacity and low permeability provide an effective hydraulic seal. Volclay CETCO GCLs, with a total thickness of less than 6mm, provide better hydraulic performance than 1m of compacted clay (in landfill bottom liners). For other areas, they can be compared to circa 600 mm of compacted clay. In order for the GCL to perform adequately, it needs to be confined with at least 300 mm of fill.

Volclay CETCO offers a wide range of products for economical performance driven product selection and specification. Offering a broad selection of products allows for a diverse range of applications. The BENTOMAT product line offers needlepunched reinforcement to meet the high internal shear strength requirements of steep slope projects. For conditions that require high performance in high hydrostatic head conditions such as ponds, Volclay CETCO manufactures the Composite Laminate (CL) series of products

Installation of Volclay CETCO GCLs is easy. Volclay CETCO GCLs are manufactured in large rolls (5 metres by 40 metres), that require a simple overlapped seam. No special seaming equipment or labour is required. The BENTOMAT product line is enhanced with the Supergroove®. This edge treatment technology allows the GCL to be overlapped without the need for adding accessory bentonite. Easy installation thus allows for a cost-effective liner system.

THE PRODUCTS

BENTOMAT ST
BENTOMAT ST is a reinforced GCL consisting of a layer of Volclay sodium bentonite encapsulated between two geotextiles (woven and non-woven), needlepunched together for maximum performance under a wide variety of field conditions. This integrated matrix of bentonite and needlepunched fibers provides high shear strength and allows BENTOMAT ST to maintain low permeability. When placed, the BENTOMAT ST has a woven, slit-film upper geotextile for maximizing intimate contact if used in a composite liner system with HDPE Geomembranes.

BENTOMAT DN
BENTOMAT DN is a reinforced needlepunched GCL that has high internal shear strength, comprising an additional non-woven geotextile, to provide excellent interface friction on both sides. BENTOMAT DN is ideally suited for steep-slope liner or cover systems where intimate contact with the upper geomembrane is less critical than the overall liner system stability.

BENTOMAT CL
BENTOMAT CL is a reinforced GCL composed of two carrier geotextiles needlepunched together to encapsulate a layer of Volclay sodium bentonite. In addition to this, a thin HDPE geomembrane is adhered to the non-woven side of the GCL. The composite laminate gives the GCL excellent hydraulic performance and provides puncture and tensile strengths beyond conventional plastic membranes. This product is ideal for landfills (base and cappings), ponds, wetlands, surface impoundments and other containment projects.
